A line of flax is in His hand

In the ancient world flax linen was very popular as its fiber is much stronger than cotton. The Lord is seen here holding a line in his hand made from flax; but why was He holding a line of twined flax? What was the flax symbolic of? First of all the blooming of the flax plant comes in two colors; pale blue and also deep red. The symbolic interpretation of both colors speaks of Yeshua’s suffering. He was bruised for our transgressions and some of His inflictions also caused hemorrhage. Yeshua was slapped in the face while blindfolded, a crown of thorns was pressed into His head, and He received many lashes which caused severe bruising and bleeding. To prove that He was dead a spear was thrust in His side and this was His reality for the sins of all; Isaiah 53:4-5; Luke 18:31-33; 22:63-64; Matthew 26:67-68; 27:24-31; Mark 14:65; 15:15-20; John 19:1-5. The twined flax cord therefore is a memorial of His suffering. He became our living sacrifice that we might be presented to the Father through His finished work for our salvation. This is not all there is to the flax plant because it also produces an edible oil; a symbol of Yeshua’s office as High Priest. He was crushed, and poured out that we might become beneficiaries of the kingdom of God. The final fact about flax lies in the interpretation of its name, which is “most useful.” Our Lord was most useful unto His Father by laying down His life for all. Our eternal hope was paid by one who became sin for all. Our sin was far too great for us to bear, so a loving Father gave us all that He had to snatch us back from the dragnet of hell which we truly deserve and declared us not guilty.

A measuring reed is in His hand

The Lord also had a measuring reed in His hand, (see Revelation 21:15-16). A reed is a rod or ruler used for measuring lengths and its symbolic meaning speaks of the measurement of man in Yeshua our hope of glory and the new man in Yeshua Jesus is the embodiment of this hope (see Colossians 1:26-28; Ephesians 4:4-32). Yeshua is the only foundation that both Israel and Believers are built on. The prophet Isaiah said of Yeshua: “Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste” (28:16, for further reading see also Psalm 118:22; Matthew 21:42; Acts 4:11; 1 Peter 2:4-9).
