He was always buying art but it wasn’t until 2009 that the tireless Frenchman Frédéric de Goldschmidt began thinking of himself as a collector. His collection is now shown in several locations around the city. De Goldschmidt operates temporary showrooms in the Quartier des Quais and a permanent location is currently in planning: at the end of 2019, the collection will be moving into a three-story exhibition space at Quai du Commerce—located in a building where he provides not only co-working space but also room for artist residencies. His collection revolves conceptually around the group Zero and their associates, with works by Günther Uecker, Heinz Mack, or Piero Manzoni. In the meantime, de Goldschmidt has begun collecting mostly younger artists, such as Stef Heidhues, or Joël Andrianomearisoa. The common thread here is a reduced aesthetic and great sensitivity for rather simple materials. De Goldschmidt rearranges the collection each year in time for Art Brussels.
