Charles Riva—collector and former gallerist with French-Italian roots—views his Charles Riva Collection in Brussels as a nonprofit space. Here he lives with his collection in a centrally located, luxurious, nineteenth-century townhouse. Since 2009, Riva has organized two exhibitions a year featuring works of artists from the collection. Represented are primarily American artists including Paul McCarthy, Frank Stella, Robert Mapplethorpe, or Richard Prince, but European names are also present such as Jonathan Meese, Francesco Vezzoli, David Ostrowski, AES + F, and others. Going to galleries is a serious thing, Riva says, almost on par with attending church. Visitors to his collection will experience first-hand how private spaces can completely change the effect that art has on viewers. In 2015, Riva opened another space just two kilometers away: Riva Project focuses exclusively on presenting contemporary sculpture.
