A house in the elegant International Style, flooded with light, overlooking the ocean and a garden dotted with sculptures by Henry Moore. This dreamy house is not located in Pacific Palisades, California, but rather on a bay near Helsinki. The modernist villa, built in 1958, belonged to the collector pair Gunnar and Marie-Louise Didrichsen. Its architect, Viljo Revell, once an assistant to Alvar Aalto, later added a structure that in 1965 was opened as the Didrichsen Art Museum. Gunnar Didrichsen, a Dane who moved to Finland in 1928 and started a lucrative business, began collecting with his wife, Marie-Louise, and he loved progress as much as he liked art. The comprehensive collection of the now-late couple includes classical modernist works alongside pre-Columbian art and Chinese antiquities.

Typical Finland: the Sara Hildén Art Museum, in Tampere, is nestled harmoniously in an expansive sculpture park abutting a lakeshore. Sara Hildén (1905–1993) was a successful entrepreneur in the fashion industry who collected Finnish and international artists of her time. In 1962 she established a foundation. The museum was commissioned by the city of Tampere in 1979, and was designed by the local architect Pekka Ilveskoski as a two-story, low-rise building with large windows. Over 1 500 square meters serve to showcase the collection’s works, some 5 000 objects. The focus remains on Finnish art: from the “Finnish Frida Kahlo,” Helene Schjerfbeck, to very young artists. Wide-ranging special exhibitions feature internationally renowned artists like Alex Katz, Subodh Gupta, or Wilhelm Sasnal.
