When Boudewijn Jansen and Yvette van Dishoeck, who are both Dutch, met in 1992 in Prague, it was love—for one another, the city, and Czech art. The couple began to put together an extensive collection by visiting artists in their studios, since galleries were few and far between right after the fall of the Wall. They first acquired large-scale paintings by Jan Merta or František Matoušek. Then came photographs by Ivan Pinkava as well as sculptures by Olbram Zoubek or Petr Císařovský, who also designed the extraordinary front door to the apartment building where the collectors live. The bronze relief depicts Czech philosopher Johann Amos Comenius and Dutch theologian Erasmus of Rotterdam. Barbora Škorpilová’s clear and elegant interior design concept for the living spaces also creates the perfect setting for design objects by Milan Pekař and Jiři Pelcl. Incidentally, the collection is named after the mythological figure Hyakynthos, a lover of the god Apollo.

Veronika Smetáčková was born in Prague into a family of artists, but grew up in Berlin. More than ten years ago, she began intensively exploring her cultural identity—and discovered an unwavering passion for Czech art in the process. Since 2005, Smetáčková has been acquiring works at international art fairs and returning the pieces back to the Czech Republic—the home country of the artists. The collector, who spends her time between Berlin and Prague, fulfilled her dream when she purchased an apartment in a historic building in Prague’s Old Town in 2013. This is where she presents works by primarily contemporary artists such as sculptor Eva Kot’átková, installation artist Krištof Kintera, or sculptor David Černý. However, the collection also includes works by international representatives who have been inspired in one way or another by the Czech Republic, such as Berlin-based Lennart Grau or Romanian artist Ioana Nemeş.
