Founded in 2009 by Anastasios A. Gkekas, the collection presides over a wide variety of formats, artists, and thematic content. Gkekas, who runs a gallery close to his apartment within the medieval walls of Nicosia’s city center, loves juxtaposing otherwise contrasting positions. The private collection, which he presents at his home, as well as in external exhibitions, includes works by international artists, mainly from Europe and the Middle East. Often these are figurative photographs or sculptures with motifs like the human body, which serves as a point of departure for dealing with political themes. The works of Cypriot artists Nicolas Panayi and Glafkos Koumides, for example, address and examine the current situation in their divided homeland, while those of Nazgol Ansarinia center on modern Iran. British artist Robert Montgomery, by contrast, focuses on Western civilization in works involving poetic writing.
