Dynamic, not static. This is the motto of the Belgian collector pair Geert Verbeke and Carla Verbeke-Lens. “Our exhibition space does not aim to be an oasis. Our presentation is unfinished, in motion, unpolished, contradictory, untidy, complex, inharmonious, living, and unmonumental,” says Verbeke. The former logistics businessman opened a twelve-hectare art park in 2007 on his company’s property. Storage buildings and greenhouses offer 20 000 square meters of covered space for two enormous special exhibitions per year. The Verbekes started with collages and assemblages, but now they prefer “Bio-Art”—art that includes living animals, plants, and even scents. Visitors unable to see the whole display in a single day can spend a night in a truly new environment: Joep van Lieshout’s eccentric polyester sculpture CasAnus, a gigantic reconstruction of a human rectum.
