Abstract

Due to their transparency to syntactic operations, particle verbs should be analysed as constituted by syntactic objects. On the other hand, since their meaning is often non-transparent to logical decomposition, they are often regarded as products of lexical word formation. This assumption seems to be supported by their lexical properties, among them the existence of nouns apparently resulting from their nominalisation according to lexical rules. This paper discusses these arguments and argues that the nouns in question can be formed independently by lexical composition. Thus, it does not seem necessary to assume the lixical formation of particle verbs.
