The gluing sequence
ОглавлениеAll rings, but not the base, are usually glued together at the same time. However, for bowls with designs that require precise ring alignment, gluing the rings in stages will give better control. Once the rings are glued, they are clamped until the glue has dried. The next step is to sand the inside of the ring assembly, since sanding access will be limited once the base is attached. When this step is completed and the inside edge of the bottom ring is rounded and smooth, the base is glued into place. To remove any glue that oozes onto the surface of the base, unclamp the bowl briefly after about five minutes, scrape it off, and clean up any remaining residue with a damp paper towel. Re-clamp the bowl and let the glue dry completely. Although conventional clamps or even heavy books can be used for the glue-up, a bowl press is more convenient and helps keep the alignment while exerting strong, even pressure.
A good-quality adhesive is essential for a sound glue-up. Weldbond and Titebond II or III are appropriate choices.
