Spindle sander

Оглавление

This versatile tool is easiest to use for projects in which the spindle and table are perpendicular to each other. In this orientation, the workpiece can make contact with the spindle at any point. It’s much harder to use when the table is tilted, as when sanding the inside of a straight-sided bowl. One reason is that it’s more difficult to rotate the rings smoothly on a tilted table. Another is that for the rings to be sanded at the designated angle, they must contact the spindle only at the high point of the table. If the rings meet the spindle at the sides or low point of the table, the gluing surface will quickly be sanded away. For this reason, I recommend using the spindle sander for bowls with rings at least 3/8” (10mm) wide, because the ample ring width provides a small cushion in the event of mishaps. Despite the potential for disaster, when used correctly this sander creates a smooth, straight interior that’s hard to match.
