Sanding is the procedure through which the rough-looking stack of rings is turned into a work of art. As with intarsia, sanding serves to shape and sculpt, as well as to smooth the surface. Preliminary shaping is done with sanders using a coarse grit, such as 80-grit. Once the shape has been established, sanding is done with progressively finer grits to refine the surface. I usually sand to 220- or 320-grit, until the surface feels smooth and ready to finish.
