Making a Bowl Press

Оглавление

A shop-made bowl press, with optional spacers, is invaluable to prevent slippage as you glue up your bowl rings. Though you can use other methods of clamping, a bowl press is the easiest and quickest way to exert an even amount of pressure across the bowl being clamped.

Materials

• (2) 11" (279mm) squares of ¾" (19mm) plywood

• (6) 3/8" (10mm) x 6" (152mm) carriage bolts, non-galvanized

• (6) Nuts to fit the carriage bolts, non-galvanized

• (6) Washers to fit the carriage bolts, non-galvanized

• (6) Wing nuts to fit the carriage bolts, non-galvanized

• Double -sided tape

• 1¼" (32mm) x 2½" (64mm) x 9" (229mm) piece of hardwood for spacers (optional)

Tools

• 3/8" (10mm) (press) drill bit

• 7/16" (11mm) (spacers) drill bit

• Wrench to tighten nuts

Spacers are useful accessories if you are gluing up just a few rings or a low bowl. They slide over the bolts after the top is in place, and allow you to tighten the press quickly. Use a hardwood that is at least 1" (25mm) thick, and as wide as the height you need.

Stand the wood on its side and mark six drilling holes spaced about 1½" (38mm) apart. Drill through the wood with a 7/16" (11mm) bit. Set the wood on its face and cut between the holes, forming six blocks. The spacers in the photo are about 1¼" x 1¼" x 2½" (32mm x 32mm x 64mm).

1 Cutting the plywood. Stack the plywood and attach the pieces to each other with double-sided tape. Center the pattern and cut out the circle with a scroll saw or band saw. Do not separate the circles.

2 Drilling the holes. Drill through both pieces of wood with a 3/8" (10mm) bit at the six places indicated on the pattern. Make an alignment mark on the edge of the pieces.

3 Completing the press. Separate the pieces. Push a carriage bolt through each hole on one of the pieces. This will be the base of your press. Place a washer and nut on top of the base and tighten the nuts evenly all around until the bolts are drawn in tightly. Enlarge the holes slightly on the second piece with a circular file or spindle sander until it fits easily over the bolts.

4 Using the press. To use the press, place a piece of wax paper on the base, place the glued-up rings on the wax paper, and place another piece of wax paper on top of the rings. Slide the top plate over the bolts. Tighten the wing nuts alternately until evenly tight. Do not over-tighten or the rings can distort.
