This workshop staple is ideal for sanding the outside face of straight-sided bowls. Since it leaves vertical scratches that run across the grain, use the finest grit belt that will do the job. To sand a bowl, tilt the table to the same angle used for cutting the rings. Place the bowl bottom flat on the table. If the angle is set correctly, the side of the bowl will rest against the belt. Rotate the bowl evenly as you sand, to avoid flat spots. Sand until the surface is smooth and all blade and drill marks have been removed. If it appears that certain areas will require more sanding than others, switch to a flexible pad sander. It allows you work selectively on the problematic areas and will give a better overall result.
