In 2010, when promoting the publication of Essays in honour of my Father, I had quite an exchange of correspondence with all his admirers around the world, proposing them to join with an article.

The 89 contributors who enthusiastically accepted included many Ibero American friends and among them D. José Luis Goñi Etchevers.As the title of the paper tells (Our Francesco) his article consisted with (beautiful) words describing a long-lasting friendship which started at the 1963 CMI Conference in Stockholm.

There is a passage regarding IIDM. José Luis recalls: “… when we created the Ibero-American Institute of Maritime Law – still alive and well after 23 years. He was very enthusiastic about the project, its integration into the CMI and about lending it his support”.

In 2007, upon invitation of President Angel Ramos Brusiloff I attended the XII Congress of Maritime Law in Sevilla to celebrate the XX Anniversary of the foundation of IIDM. On that occasion a touching ceremony was conducted to present the International Legal Essay Award Premio Internacional Ensayo Jurídico Francisco Goñi Jiménez, whose Award Commission was chaired by José Luis.

So nice remembrances also of Fran, a natural gentleman, as all the Goñi’s. Although quite much involved with the legal profession, he shared his Father’s passion for the CMI, participating to the Conferences of Paris, Sidney and Antwerp. Together with Saleta, Adelina, Tom and Imogen Birch Reynardson we enjoyed so much being together at the 2006 CMI Colloquium in Cape Town.

The Goñi’s and the Berlingieri’s attended together many CMI Conferences: New York in September 1965, Tokyo in March 1969, Hamburg in April 1973, Rio de Janeiro in November 1977, Montreal in May 1981, Lisbon in May 1985, Paris in June 1990, Sidney in October 1994, Antwerp in June 1997, Singapore in February 2001, Vancouver in June 2004, Athens in October 2008.

In his article for the Essays, José Luis has beautiful words also for my Mother. I would like to extend such words for Dña Josefa: how distinguished and charming, always a great pleasure seeing her and talking with her.

I was in Lisbon for the XIX Congress of IIDM in November 2014, upon invitation of President Luiz Roberto Leven Siano.

The 21 November, at the presence of Doña Pepita (if I may) and Saleta, Ignacio Melo, Luis Cova Arria and Guillermo Sarmiento addressed the Congress with moved words remembering José Luis.
