the LORD to speak to Israel whether they choose to listen or not because he is now God’s ambassador to that nation and they would know without a shadow of doubt that the Spirit of the LORD GOD rested upon him.
Verses 6-10
And thou, son of man, be not afraid of them, neither be afraid of their words, though briers and thorns be with thee, and thou dost dwell among scorpions: be not afraid of their words, nor dismayed at their looks, though they be a rebellious house. And thou shall speak My words unto them, whether they will hear, or whether they will forbear: for they are most rebellious. But thou, son of man, hear what I say unto thee; Be not thou rebellious like that rebellious house: open thy mouth, and eat that I give thee. And when I looked, behold, an hand was sent unto me; and, lo, a roll of a book was therein; and He spread it before me; and it was written within and without: and there was written therein lamentations, and mourning, and woe.
Once more the LORD encourages Ezekiel not to be afraid to deliver His rebuke to his brethren. Chastisement was necessary, and it was coming. The LORD GOD describes the people whom Ezekiel lived among as being scorpions, which was an unflattering term to address their hypocrisy. They professed one thing, yet their actions were the direct opposite, in reality they resented the truth although pretending to be in agreement. The people believed GOD had winked at their sins because He withheld judgment, not knowing that His love and mercy constrained His ruling. God repeatedly warned Israel but His extended mercy returned to Him rejected and He was left with no alternative but to withdraw Himself from them for a season.
