The prophet also received a warning from God to deliver His messages exactly the way He gave it and not to be afraid of the consequences of retribution because the words were not his own, he was only an envoy. The prophet knew that his judgment would be more severe if he sugar coated the Word of God or be a people pleaser. With his commission settled in his heart, Ezekiel resigns himself to do exactly as he had been told. The newly appointed prophet is given a scroll (book), which had writings on both sides. This scroll was not pleasant to either look upon or read, as its inscriptions were lamentations, mourning, and woes.

What really did Ezekiel see? Was it the destruction of the temple by the Romans? Was it the dispersion of the Hebrew people outside of Israel called the Diaspora? Was it the concentration camps of the Nazis? Or was it the relentless persecution and constant threat of annihilation which followed them to every corner of the earth where they subsequently settled? What Ezekiel eyes observed written on both sides of the scroll was definitely not good news.
