The primary function of the quilting stitches is to hold the three layers of the quilt (top, batting, and backing) together securely enough to last the lifetime of the quilt. Traditional hand quilting can be a slow process; therefore, on the quilts featured in this book, either the quilting is done by machine or there are suggestions for quick hand-quilting designs. You can always change from machine to hand quilting if time is not a factor.
