Designs can be as complicated or as simple as you wish. If you intend to machine quilt, look for designs that can be stitched in a continuous motion. Quick quilting designs make use of seam lines or the pattern on the fabric. Any other designs need to be marked before you layer the quilt.

There are a variety of marking tools available: 2H pencils, silver and yellow quilters’ pencils, washable marking pens, and more. Whichever you choose, always test the marking tool on a scrap of the fabric you have chosen for your quilt; you should be able to remove your designs after you have quilted. You then need to attach the quilt top to the backing and batting by either bagging out or layering.
