TYING A QUILT
ОглавлениеA quick alternative to quilting is tying. By this method, the top, batting, and backing sandwich is held together by a grid of knots stitched through all three layers. The thread for this needs to be thicker; for example, pearl cotton is good, or double knitting wool imparts a rustic effect (details are given with individual quilt instructions). A sharp needle with a large eye is essential. Use a long length of thread to allow for multiple ties.
1 | Starting in the center of the area where you wish to position the tie, take a stitch through all three layers and draw the thread through, leaving a tail about 6 inches (15 cm) long. Reenter the quilt at the point where the next tie will be located and take another stitch, leaving a loop between stitches.
2 | Repeat, without cutting, until there is a stitch in each of the places that will have a tie.
3 | Cut between the stitches and then tie the threads using a surgeon’s square knot.
