Hoops can be handheld (round or oval) or on a floor stand. If you are using a handheld hoop, choose a 14-inch (35-cm) or 16-inch (40-cm) diameter for ease. Hoops on floor stands can have bigger diameters. Hoops are considered to be more portable, and they allow you to turn the work. Do not leave a quilt in a hoop when you are not working on it, as this will distort your piece.

Layer and baste the quilt, and then place the quilt over the bottom ring, place the top ring over the quilt, and tighten the ring. The fabric need not be as tight as a drumhead, but the work should be smooth. Work from the center outward.
