ABSTRACT: This article presents the most important reasons contributing to the need for existing energy networks to be better interconnected and expanded in order to make the energy transition to a sustainable energy supply successful. The European Union has strong competences to participate in the necessary procedures for the energy transition through Art 194 TFEU and Art 170 as well as Art 171 TFEU. For example, this can be done by defining projects of common interest and establishing procedural aspects for the expansion of networks by means of a network development plan. One key area within this topic is the importance of a electricity bidding zone, which will be examined in this text by focusing on the separation of the joint Austrian-German-Luxembourgian bidding zone. Of note here is the fact that the regulation governing the internalmarket for electricity [regulation (EU) 943/2019] already details a procedure for future amendments of electricity bidding zones.
