The variability of wind and solar power generation in particular requires intelligent grid management and the use of so-called ‘smart grids’. The goals of European energy policy can only be achieved through flexible grid management that is not organised around a single grid but a management approach that can effectively respond to supply and demand fluctuations throughout the grid networks in Europe.
