As time goes by we can reasonably expect there to be significantly higher demand for electricity. In this regard, estimates for Germany’s requirements in the 2040-2050 period suggest that up to 25 percent more electricity power will be consumed than today2. Reasons for this are many and varied: the growing need for de-carbonising processes in industry to meet climate goals; increasing electrification in the heating and transport sectors; the increasing use of power-to-gas facilities for hydrogen production; as well as the expected increase of power for IT and computing purposes related to digitisation (data processing centres3, cryptocurrency mining and so forth)4.
