Heart and mind
ОглавлениеThe mind is an instrument that largely concerns itself with mundane things. It consists of, and originates from, matter and therefore knows and recognizes only matter. We know this to be true from the fact that the mind has to perceive and analyze things in order to reach a conclusion. In other words, the mind knows things after the event, which is usually too late. It is dependent on what it learns from experience. It first needs to experience, then analyze, then reach a conclusion which it can then contribute – after the event. This is why the mind only knows what happened after it has happened. This gap between happening and knowing is the unknown, and it scares us. But as we can see, the unknown only exists in our imagination; it only has a pseudo-existence which starts where our knowledge ends. Looking at it this way, we ourselves have created the unknown, which means we are scared of our own invention. It follows that the limitation of our mind is the source of our fears.
The mind is our instrument of perception and coordination in the material world and should be of service to us, not the other way around.
We should make use of our mind, and not let our mind use us!
The mind is not our only available means of perception. There is also the heart. Unlike the mind, the heart knows things in advance. This is a fact we all experience many times each and every day. When we go to view a flat, for some mysterious reason we know in advance that it is not the right flat for us. When we meet someone, we sense instantly whether this will lead to a partnership. If anyone asks us to explain why, we are unable to come up with any reasons, and yet we are certain that we are right. Unfortunately, we usually ignore these heart signals, choosing instead to rely on our mind, which, of course, has no knowledge of anything in advance. We do not trust our feelings, do not listen to our inner voice and instead allow ourselves to be carried away by superficial emotions.
We need not reject and condemn our mind. It is a wonderful instrument to navigate our way around this world. We need to learn to make good use of both these instruments together. Heart and mind collate and process information in parallel. We need to be aware of the important difference between both kinds of information – it is the difference between knowledge and wisdom.
