Live or let live?

Оглавление

We humans have two possible ways of conducting our life: we either realize our own potential and live our own life, or we live by someone else’s ideas and allow them to pull our strings.

Most people get up in the morning, brush their teeth, have breakfast, go to work, come home tired, do some chores, have dinner and go to sleep. But why do they do that? What are their goals and values? What rules do they live by? Why are they alive? What is the meaning of their life?

When you act from the basis of your own convictions, you live on your own terms. But when your actions are based on what other people regard as right and proper, then you do not live on your own terms but allow others to determine your behaviour and your life. Meaning, you do not act according to your own values but according to other people’s values. When we adopt the values and guidelines for the way we live our life from the outside, without even checking their validity, we are stopping the process of our inner spiritual development.1

Spiritual evolution is not possible without spiritual self-reliance and independence.

When you emulate your idol, you are surrendering your own life and living that of your role model. The consequence of this is a life filled with someone else’s behaviour patterns – this is how some magazine or other gets to decide, subliminally, what kind of hairstyle we have, what kind of clothes we wear, what we spend our money on, what we like or dislike. Some people we have never even met get to decide our behaviour, and with that, our life. And so, slowly and by invisible means, we become submissive puppets who no longer move of their own accord, but rely on being steered and moved along by an outside force.

Being alive means living your own free, self-determined and authentic life, on your own terms.

We do not need to search for role models, but instead need to find our own exemplary ways of behaving.

Living also means acting and living from your own true nature. In other words, you constructively look at your own life, at yourself as a person; you become aware of your true nature and talents and use these for the greater good.

Letting others live their lives means that we help those around us become aware of their true nature, realize their potential and so be happy. But we can only offer our help; we cannot force it on them. We must not interfere in someone else’s destiny without considering the potential consequences.

It also means leaving those around us alone so that they can achieve what they regard as right, even though in future it might turn out to be a mistake.

People have the right to make as many mistakes as they need to grow in spirit, provided they do not prevent others from realizing their potential.

Live or let live – either one is only possible when we respect, honour and love each other and when we allow each other the space we need for our spiritual growth.
