Pilates
ОглавлениеPilates is a practice of mindful movement that focuses on strengthening core postural muscles and developing proper body alignment and flexibility. Today, two main philosophies of Pilates exist. Classical Pilates teaches the original method of founder Joseph Pilates, whereas Contemporary Pilates schools have developed the practice further while still maintaining the principles of Pilates. A third type, Clinical Pilates, is being used in rehabilitation, physical therapy, and other clinical areas.
If you try Pilates, a common starting point is group mat classes, which teach you principles and basic movements using slow, precise instruction. You’ll also be introduced to Pilates’ unique breathing patterns, which don’t quite match the pattern of traditional exercise. Sessions typically run 60 minutes. You can also do mat work at home and use online classes from services such as Pilates Anytime.
With consistent practice, you can expect to strengthen your core postural muscles, developing pelvic stability and abdominal control as well as improving flexibility and day-to-day functional strength. Improved breathing, coordination, balance, and positive body awareness are benefits. Pilates is low impact. Weight loss and maximal strength (i.e., bulk and power) are not the focus.
