Indoor cycling programs have spread worldwide, growing out of the Spinning workout and indoor bike developed by Johnny Goldberg in 1994. Of these programs, SoulCycle is one of the more popular, upmarket programs available.

In a standard 45-minute class, the instructor will lead you through a routine on a special stationary exercise bike with a weighted flywheel. Expect a candlelit setting, motivational coaching, and loud, upbeat music, with hand weights and upper body exercise included. There are also 60- and 90-minute workouts available. You can burn 200 to 700 calories per class.

Some find SoulCycle’s cost steep and its atmosphere a bit cultish and loud. There are quite a few other indoor cycling options to consider, including CycleBar, Flywheel, and Peloton. The latter allows you to train through the Internet in the comfort of your own home.
