ABSTRACT

Оглавление

Nowadays, we can clearly see the enormous relevance that family business has in our society in order to generate wealth and employment, not only in Spain but also around the world. Although these companies may present the same problems as any other type of organization, their uniqueness implies that they have to face different challenges, which mainly affect business continuity. That happens because in this type of businesses converge two different institutions, the family and the company, where business profitability and family harmony are measured simultaneously. However, conflicts arise when both are not achieved in parallel, which can seriously affect both the operation of company and the family relations. This singularity is neatly evident in the process of generational succession. That situation combined with the strong tensions that currently arise in the market as a consequence of globalization and economic crisis, result in a survival rate at the first generational change of less than 40%, according to various studies carried out by the Institute of Family Business.

Therefore, it is necessary to support new management strategies in such companies to promote innovation and the adoption of new management models that professionalize the entire organization, starting with the management of the company, in order to create the governing bodies, as well as the “succession plan” and the “family protocol”. This is, undoubtedly, the best way to contribute to the improvement of their competitiveness in addition to reducing conflicts arising from the hard union among family, property and business.
