To assign the next two positions north and south, Ezekiel 1:5 offers a clue. The living creatures’ faces first mentioned were that of man, but as we notice his position was not yet assigned; having forfeited his legal right to rule the earth through God’s delegated authority that was given to him. For this reason man is assigned to the north, which is counterclockwise from east. Here we see a type of rebellion being presented. Let’s take for example a clock, if its hands move backward instead of forward, its rotation is called counterclockwise, which is to say: it is moving in a direction opposite to that which it was designed. This is the likely reason why the first set of faces mentioned were that of man, although it was the lion and oxen positions that was given. Man had to be reconciled unto Abba Father first, before he could take his rightful place as a leader.
The new man in Yeshua has to live a progressively sanctified life in the service of his Lord, thereby exercising sovereign power with Yeshua Jesus. Although north is counterclockwise from east, it lies at a ninety degree angle from it, which is the coming unveiling of unity, perfection and oneness of the new man in the kingdom age of Yeshua Messiah. Man must first pass the test of following, before he is granted the honor to lead. King David puts it this way in Psalm 8:3-6: When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; what is man that Thou art mindful of him? And the son of man, that thou visitest him? For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honor. Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of Thy hands: Thou hast put all things under his feet.
This brings us to the eagle, the place in the south; it is a picture of man as prophet or watchman; he sees from a vantage point far above. His spirit is heightened as he is taken to a place in God where he sees things holistically not because of natural sight, but because of insight. If we are at ground level, that is the level at which we view things, but as we move higher in God, we are able to see things much clearer, and the higher we go the greater we
