Shi Deqing (1546–1623) würdigte die Besonderheit dieses vielkommentierten Kapitels, das den Kern der Philosophie Zhuangzi’s in kondensierter Form zusammenfasst und vom Umfang her an drei Fünftel des Daodejing heranreicht: »This chapter speaks literally and vertically, up down and back and forth, for over three thousand characters, finally arriving at this one word ›other‹ to conclude it. What power it has!« (Shi Deqing / Ziporyn, S. 160) Guo Xiang kommentierte die Überschrift des Kapitels mit einem Satz, der für die nachfolgende Zeit eine wegweisende psychologische Interpretationslinie markierte: »Every creature without exception considers itself right and the others wrong, praising itself and defaming others. It is in precisely this sense that, although each embraces a different definition of right and wrong, self and other are exactly equal.« (Guo Xiang / Ziporyn, S. 135) In der Song-Zeit kehrte der Gelehrte Wang Pang zu einer schlichten existenzphilosophischen Interpretation zurück: »The myriad of things receive yin and yang and are born; I also received yin and yang and was born. Though they may be bestowed with different appearances, all that is born comes from the same source … hence Zhuangzi has a chapter on levelling things.« (Wang Pang / Chai, S. 13)
