Guo Xiang eröffnete seinen Kommentar zu diesem Kapitel mit den Worten: »Since we are living with men, we cannot get away from them. But the human world is always changing; one generation is different from another. Only those who have no prejudice and not insist on their own selves can follow the changes and not suffer.« (Guo Xiang / Feng Youlan, S. 65) Shi Deqing leitete das Kapitel unter dem Gesichtspunkt der spirituellen Praxis wie folgt ein: »This chapter describes the sage’s course for handling life in the world. The previous chapter on the nourishing of the host of life concerned keeping the business of the world from harming the life in you, but what really nourishes life is an inner skill that can only be made your own and verified by involving yourself in the ways of the world. A person who is truly able to nourish the flow of his life will handle living in the world without boasting of his talents, seeking reputation, or forcing his way when there is no call for it.« (Shi Deqing / Ziporyn, S. 171)
