Verbal politeness normally entails certain aspects of relationship handling. A communicative exchange requires not only anticipation of the constellations between the partners involved, but also strategies in order to influence or to make clear the image of the interlocutors. The contribution deals with fundamental functions of face-work and seeks to illustrate this through literary dialogues taken from novels of Theodor Fontane. The analysis focusses, above all, on problems that may arise from translations into French, and offers information on how polite behaviour is influenced by social and cultural factors during the period in question.
