Politeness may be reconstructed as a means of controlling social distance, depending on the evaluation of situations and cultural factors. In managing politeness the communicative behaviour need not be symmetrical but can be complementary or even dissonant. Two examples from 19th century literary texts (Karl May, Thomas Mann) are used to illustrate how this was achieved and also commented in poetic contexts. Some examples from an Austrian guide for polite behaviour (so-called Complimentirbuch) of the early 19th century (Rittler 1834) are quoted to illustrate ways of resolving social conflicts without losing composure.
